Spark
counselling
A counselling service that offers a welcoming, supportive and non-judgemental space for you to explore any concerns you may be facing.
What can Spark Counselling offer you?
There aren't many spaces where you can speak your mind, without fear of reaction or judgement from the other person. Counselling can provide a chance to speak freely -
a unique opportunity to unburden yourself of worries and share concerns.
I have experience working with bereavement, relationship issues, stress, anxiety, sexuality, phobias, body image, low self-esteem, depression, anger issues, long-term health conditions, abuse, trauma and more.
With ongoing training, and continuing professional development, I strive to offer an inclusive space for whatever may be troubling you.
About
Hi, my name is Sami (she/her). I’m a trained counsellor based in Plymouth (near Mutley Plain) and I am a member of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotheray) with years of experience working with mental health.
I have a particular interest in working with young adults, or anyone wanting to gain confidence and self-esteem, anyone suffering with anxiety or OCD, or anyone struggling with gender identity or their sexuality. As someone who has experienced first-hand how life changing counselling can be from the perspective of a client, I offer an inclusive and supportive space where you can bring any concerns - you will be believed, encouraged and accepted.
I feel strongly that as a counselling client, you are the expert in your own experience, the role of a counsellor is to provide an opportunity for you to explore your concerns and offer support to you. You may have specific aims in mind for what you want from counselling, or you may be feeling confused or lost but wanting a listening ear... there is no one specific right path, each client will have a different counselling journey. I offer a free exploration Zoom/phone call to answer any questions you may have.
My approach to counselling makes use of different theories to best adapt to the client’s needs. I have training in CBT, Person-Centred, Gestalt and Transpersonal concepts, with ongoing professional development, to make sure I work with the most recent advancements in therapy. I work with adults (16 years and older) on a one-to-one basis. This can be in-person or online over Zoom.
I hold a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Level 4), a degree in Psychology and Counselling, and a Masters degree in Health Psychology. I have experience working as a counsellor for Devon Mind and I have spent many years volunteering as a Youth Support Worker (mostly relating to sexual health and mental wellbeing) with people aged 13-25. I am currently undertaking a Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling (Level 5).
When I’m not working, you will find me in a pair of brightly coloured dungarees, hanging out with my dog
Process and Fees
I understand that it may be daunting getting in contact with a counsellor, I offer a free 20 minute exploration Zoom/phone call for you to ask any questions you may have and to see if I’m a good fit for you, or if you prefer to use emails instead, this is also welcomed. Drop me an email to get started:
I feel strongly that private counselling should be as affordable as possible and something that is accessible for those with lower incomes. My fee is £45 a session, I offer a limited number of concessionary rates, starting at £35. This can be discussed in an exploration call. Sessions are between 50-55 minutes, with payment being made prior to or by the session end. I have a card machine for payment, or through BACs, but cash is also welcomed. Most people begin with sessions once a week, however, we can discuss what suits you best.
Some clients prefer to commit to 6 sessions if there are specific aims in mind, others prefer ongoing long-term support. There isn’t a one size fits all with counselling and your needs may change throughout the process, regular reviews during sessions are helpful for this.
Sessions can be in-person (in a well-being centre based just off Mutley Plain) or online over Zoom. My availability at the moment is Wednesday afternoon/evenings onwards and Thursdays 7am-8pm. However, I may be able to offer other evenings in the week, this can be discussed in the exploration call.
Why ‘Spark’ Counselling?
The name Spark Counselling came to mind at 2am, when I was thinking about what counselling has meant to me and the ongoing impact it can have for those who experience mental health struggles.
Lyrics of one of my favourite songs inspired the name. The song is called Last Hope (by Paramore) and I interpret the lyrics to mean going through a difficult time but holding onto hope that things can get better. The spark of hope to carry on going, make changes and picture a future is what inspired me to choose this name for my counselling practice.
‘It’s just a spark, but it’s enough to keep me going’
